Be a DJ
How can I be a DJ?
WIRE DJs participate through enrollment at the University of Oklahoma in the Journalism and Mass Communication class WIRE Practicum (JMC 3011). Their airshifts are part of a hands-on experience in radio and television broadcasting. You do not need permissions to enroll in this class, nor do you have to major in JMC in order to take the class.
What kind of music does the WIRE play?
The mission of the WIRE is to introduce the University of Oklahoma and the Norman Community to the latest in alternative, rock, hip-hop, and electronic music. We play a variety of styles and artists, and feature specialty programming of a diverse nature.
Do you get paid?
Although the largest portion of our staff, our DJs, participate only for experience and college credit, there are paid managerial positions available. Anyone interested in working for us in any manner should contact the WIRE office at 325-0121.
How many college credits is the WIRE worth?
Each semester of the WIRE is worth one college credit. Different schools throughout the University honor a different number of consecutive WIRE credits, and anyone interested in repeated involvement with our station should refer to their individual school for details concerning acceptable credits.
Do you get to pick your own music?
The majority of our programming is regimented to reflect our mission statement, but specialty programming is available to DJs returning after one full semester of general programming experience. Anyone with prior WIRE experience interested in a specialty show should contact the WIRE office at (405) 325-0121 during the weeks prior to the start of the semester they would like the show for.
How long are shifts?
WIRE shifts last two hours.
How often do you work a shift?
WIRE DJs work one shift a week anywhere from 7 a.m. to Midnight.
