Sara Sweet Had One of Those Really Cool Dads

By Blair Tomlinson
Gaylord College, University of Oklahoma
April 19, 2010

Sara Sweet grew up with one of those really cool dads. A dad who doesn't complain about boyfriends but instead hangs out with them. Sweet and her high school boyfriend would go out on Saturday nights and come home to watch Saturday Night Live with her father.

Then when Sweet was in college, at Oklahoma State University, her dad would head to Stillwater to catch a basketball game, just the two of them.

Then on April 19, 1995 her dad dropped her mom off at work in Oklahoma City. He went on to his job at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in the Social Security Administration office on the first floor.

"In losing my dad, I was most upset about was the fact that I was right there on the cusp of being my own person and being an adult when he was killed," Sweet said. "I was robbed of having that adult relationship with your parent."

Knowing what Sweet now has with her mother now makes her sad because she would have loved to have that same kind of relationship with her dad too.

For Sweet and her sisters every big moment, like a wedding or the birth of one of their children, is kind of bitter sweet because there is an element of the family that is missing.

Sweet says she thinks about how much fun her dad would have had with her children and how much fun her children would of had with one of those cool really granddads.
